Practice Areas
Mary E. Schellhammer focuses her practice in two areas, family law and estate law. Within estate law, Mary handles cases involving both estate planning and estate administration. By representing clients in these two practice areas, Mary is able to provide for the legal needs of her clients and their family members through every stage of life including (but not limited to):
- Contemplating marriage
- Having or adopting children
- Considering divorce
- Dealing with child support and custody
- Obtaining Powers of Attorney and Living Wills
- Seeking a Guardianship to protect loved ones
- Obtaining a will and planning for their family’s financial security
- Being responsible for an estate after a loved one passes away
Family law includes many issues involving relationships, children, marriage, and divorce. This includes obtaining a prenuptial agreement before or a postnuptial agreement after marriage, making sure your rights are protected during divorce, seeking help if you are a victim of domestic violence, and protecting your children during custody disputes.
Estate planning involves protecting your assets while you are alive and directing their disposition after you pass away. It also includes documents such as Powers of Attorney, Living Wills, and more. If you are contemplating your family’s future and uncertain about your plans, speaking with an attorney is a good place to start.
When a loved one passes away, it is necessary to administer their estate. This means probating the estate, making certain final bills are paid and taxes filed, and distributing the inherited asset(s) to the intended beneficiaries.
